What is TextDrop?
TextDrop is a small Windows utility for people who type long text and would rather use their phone to do it.
You type or dictate on your phone using whatever input you already know — your keyboard, swipe input, or the dictation built into your phone. The text stays on your phone while you review and edit it. When you’re happy with it, you send it to Windows, where it appears at your current cursor position — in a Word document, an email, a chat window, a code editor, or an AI prompt box.
TextDrop does not do speech recognition itself, and it does not belong to any specific AI product. It is a general way to get text from your phone into any Windows app.
Quick start
- Install TextDrop on Windows from the Microsoft Store.
- Start TextDrop. A small window shows your connection status and a QR code.
- Scan the QR code with your phone’s camera. Your phone opens a simple input page.
- Type or dictate on your phone, check the text, then send it. The text appears where your cursor is in Windows.
Install TextDrop
TextDrop for Windows is available from the Microsoft Store. Search for “TextDrop” in the Store, or follow the download link from the TextDrop website.
After installation, launch TextDrop from the Start menu. No account or sign-up is required.
Connect your phone
Your phone connects to your PC over your local network — no account, no cloud service, no internet routing.
- Make sure your phone and your Windows PC are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Start TextDrop on Windows.
- Scan the QR code shown in the TextDrop window with your phone’s camera, or use the address shown in the window if your phone’s camera can’t scan it.
- Your phone opens a text input page. You’re connected.
Any phone with a web browser can connect — iPhone or Android. There is no companion app to install on your phone.
Type, review, and send
Once connected, the workflow is simple:
- Type or dictate on your phone. Use your phone’s keyboard, swipe input, or built-in dictation — whatever you normally use.
- Review and edit on your phone. The text stays on your phone until you send it, so you can check it, fix mistakes, or add more before it reaches your PC.
- Send it to Windows. Tap the send button when the text is ready. It appears at your current cursor position on Windows.
If you need to change where the text goes, just click into the right window or field on your PC first — the text will follow your cursor.
Where the text goes
TextDrop inserts text at your current cursor position in any Windows app with a text field or editor:
- Word and other documents
- Email clients
- Chat and messaging apps
- Browsers and web forms
- Code editors
- AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot
Trial, purchase, and activation
Free trial. TextDrop includes a 30-minute trial. The timer starts after your first text is successfully sent to Windows. It counts only while the app is running — close TextDrop and the timer pauses.
When the trial ends. Sending is locked and TextDrop asks you to purchase. Your text stays on your device; nothing is uploaded or deleted.
Purchase. TextDrop is a one-time purchase with no subscription:
- US$4.99 early-adopter price during the launch period
- US$9.99 regular price after the launch period
- 30-minute free trial before purchase
- Unlimited personal devices
- Free updates throughout TextDrop 1.x
- Discounted upgrades for future major versions
Activation. TextDrop for Windows activates through the Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account you use on your PC. After purchase, the license is applied automatically. If you reinstall TextDrop or move to another PC, the license is restored automatically by the Store — no activation code to enter or keep track of.
Privacy
- No account is required.
- Text is transferred directly between your phone and your PC over your local network. TextDrop does not route text through the internet.
- There is no cloud storage of your text.
- The app does not collect telemetry — no device information, usage counts, connection records, or crash reports.
Troubleshooting
Most connection problems are network problems, and the full set of fixes lives in Troubleshooting. The two you’ll meet first:
The phone page won’t open. Check that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and TextDrop is running on the PC. If it still won’t open, the troubleshooting guide covers phones silently falling back to cellular, routers that isolate devices, VPNs, and the Windows firewall prompt.
Text landed in the wrong window. The text follows your cursor, so click the target field first. If it already went in somewhere else, it’s still on your PC clipboard: click the right field and press Ctrl+V.
